Stephanie Veldhuijzen van Zanten is a pediatric palliative care physician who works in Ottawa, Ontario at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice. She is a proud Maritimer who completed her medical school at Dalhousie University prior to completing her pediatrics and subsequent pediatric palliative care training in Ottawa. Her research area of interest is primarily in perinatal palliative care, a field that has taught her about resilience, love and the enormous impact of little lives. The field is growing but there is still a lot of work to be done to adequately support this important population, so this keeps her motivated. She works with an extraordinary team of equally committed colleagues who somehow tolerate her love of bright colours, extroverted energy, and use of humour.
Outside of work she has three kids of her own who keep her and her husband on their toes and maintain a healthy stream of constant semi-controlled chaos. She also sings in a women physician’s choir which provides weekly dose of joy, community and musical therapy.
